The entire concept of the XMG STUDIO is designed to keep DPC latencies as low as possible – from components specially selected and tested for this purpose, background services deactivated in the customised operating system, and even optimised BIOS settings. As a result, the system is perfectly prepared for latency-critical real-time audio recording – reducing the application-critical DPC latencies to an absolute minimum. Even in professional video editing, no frames are dropped during playback. Everything runs smoothly and on point.

Perfect settings for your apps

Every XMG STUDIO has several dedicated profiles stored in the BIOS of the motherboard. So you don’t have to worry about manual settings, just choose the profile that best suits your use case and which is only one reboot away. The options range from profiles designed for the lowest possible DPC latencies for professional audio productions, through to a latency-optimised all-round profile, or a particularly quiet, energy-efficient Eco Silent profile.

The style of the XMG STUDIO is entirely up to you. We offer you the option to configure the desktop PC either as a professional, straightforward complete package with a set of completely non-illuminated case fans, or to go all out with an alternative configuration featuring a discreet but stylish RGB lighting concept. Optionally, you can configure up to six ARGB fans and control them via the mainboard using the lightweight open-source software OpenRGB.

Whether it’s professional audio and video editing or high-end gaming and streaming: for CPU cooling, the XMG STUDIO is purposefully equipped with Noctua’s premium NH-U12A air cooler – either in the iconic Noctua colour scheme or in the all-black chromax.black version. The advantages of CPU cooling by air instead of water are a maximum stable and safe operation. Two high-quality Noctua NF-12×25 fans provide superior quiet operation and the NH-U12A leaves all RAM banks on the motherboard free to allow for effortless, subsequent upgrades if required.

The extras include 10 Gigabit ethernet for lightning-fast data transfer from your NAS, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and ultra-smooth power delivery to the CPU via the finest quality and optimally cooled VRMs.

How to choose the right BIOS profile for your use case

The XMG STUDIO series is designed as a high-end all-rounder that meets all requirements – whether it’s gaming at maximum FPS, 3D renderings, professional video and photo editing, music production or 3D CAD applications. To get the most out of your system, you can select customised presets in the BIOS of the desktop PC for quiet everyday operation, maximum performance or DPC latency-sensitive real-time audio recording.

We ship your XMG STUDIO X or XMG STUDIO with the preset BIOS profile “Allround” ex works, which tickles the last reserves of performance out of your system. So if that’s your goal, you don’t need to bother with any of our additional special features. For special audio applications or particularly energy-efficient, quiet everyday operation, however, we have created a number of custom profiles that offer you further options. Of course, you can switch back and forth between the individual profiles and try out for yourself which setting is best for you. The three “Latency” profiles each have different effects on the ease of use and, in the case of the “Latency Pro” profile, also on the maximum possible performance of the PC – in return, however, you benefit from further improved DPC latencies.

Important note regarding the LAN ports of the motherboard – since even the onboard LAN controller on the motherboard can have an impact on the DPC latencies, it is important to note some special features here – please read carefully:

In the base configuration of every XMG STUDIO or XMG STUDIO X, we install an ASUS Prime Z790-P WIFI. However, we have deactivated the Gigabit Ethernet controller of the motherboard (Realtek chipset with negative impact on the DPC latencies) in the BIOS ex works and ship the PC with an expansion card with Intel 8254L chipset instead. Please use the pre-installed expansion card for wired network connections. To help you see which port is the right one for your LAN cable, we have marked the two ports on the back of the PC with a red (do not use, onboard LAN of the motherboard) or green (use, LAN port of the expansion card) symbol. If you don’t plan to use the XMG STUDIO X or XMG STUDIO for latency-critical audio applications, you can re-enable the disabled port yourself in the BIOS if needed.
The optional ASUS ProArt Z790-CREATOR WIFI premium motherboard has two LAN ports, each of which operates via its own onboard controller: Neither the very fast 10 Gigabit port (Marvell AQtion chipset) nor the 2.5 Gigabit port (Intel chipset) have a negative impact on DPC latencies. Therefore, both ports are active and may be used. An additional expansion card is not necessary with this motherboard.

Impact of graphics card choice on DPC latencies

The following information is only important for you if you plan to use your XMG STUDIO X or XMG STUDIO for professional real-time audio productions. All desktop PCs in this series already feature various optimisations with regard to DPC latencies. So for gaming and visual content creation, you simply choose the graphics card with the features and performance that suits your needs and don’t have to worry about anything else.

However, when it comes to professional real-time audio recording, the choice of graphics card and even the graphics card driver used may have an impact on DPC latencies. Since every XMG STUDIO X and XMG STUDIO with all configurable graphics cards is suitable for audio recording without exception, the supplementary information in this article is aimed at perfectionists. Zardonic himself is using an XMG STUDIO X with NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card for his audio productions.

Important note: You always have the option of using the monitor outputs on the motherboard, which are connected to the Intel graphics unit integrated in the processor for the best possible DPC latency values and can address up to two external monitors. If you need the much higher performance of a dedicated graphics card again after a real-time audio recording, you can simply plug your monitors back into the NVIDIA or AMD graphics card. This way you get the best of both worlds: optimal DPC latencies and maximum GPU performance.

To measure latency, we have used the app LatencyMon and refer to the “Highest reported DPC routine execution time”. To eliminate other impacts as far as possible, all measurements were also carried out in the BIOS profile “LATENCY PRO”, which focuses most on minimising DPC latencies. Since the individually achievable values are based on many different factors and there can be deviations even between two series of measurements, the following results should be understood as approximate values.

The following measured values refer to a test run with drivers and software from July 2023 – values of up to 1000 µs are considered suitable for real-time recording:

Intel UHD Graphics: approx. 350 µs
NVIDIA Quadro or professional RTX graphics cards: approx. 450 µs
AMD Radeon RX graphics cards: approx. 500 µs
NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards: up to 1000 µs

Why we have already set up a user account on your desktop PC

We ship every XMG STUDIO X or XMG STUDIO with a user account we created under the name “XMG STUDIO”: Please use this account, as it offers you advantages in terms of a completely bloatware-free installation. Creating a new account or shipping the desktop PC without a user account would cause some of the optimisations to be automatically cancelled out by the functions of Microsoft Windows. With the account we have already created, the focus of all default settings is on data protection by default: all optional and thus deselectable features for data collection by Microsoft were deactivated during installation. If you would like to have a more personalised user experience, you can of course reactivate them later.

On this page, we provide you with further information on what we have optimised to offer you a lightweight Windows installation and to keep the DPC latencies of your desktop PC as low as possible.

Better performance thanks to optimised operating system

With the desktop PCs from the XMG STUDIO series, you get a specially customised Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Professional that, thanks to our modifications, has shed a lot of unnecessary clutter. For example, we have uninstalled around 20 services and apps that would run in the background in a standard installation and have an impact on the performance and response speed of your system. Of course, you are always free to install any software you need to work or play – we just took the work out of removing everything you might not need anyway. This is also the reason for the user account we create ex-works: When you create a new account, the operating system automatically overwrites some of the modifications – this is beyond our control and therefore unavoidable.

Adjustments to the Windows power options and advanced power settings

We have permanently selected “High performance” as the Windows power plan instead of Microsoft’s default setting “Balanced”. There are also some checks and tweaks on our part in the advanced power settings (sub-option of the Windows power plan):

“USB selective suspend setting” is deactivated under “USB settings/ USB selective suspend setting “.
For “Sleep after” and “Hibernate after” under “Sleep”, the option “Never” is selected, so both functions are also deactivated.
In the “Wireless Adapter Settings” under “Power Saving Mode”, the option “Maximum performance” is selected.
For the “Processor power management”, the option “minimum processor state” is set to “100 %”.

Lightweight open-source software for systems with RGB lighting

When it comes to style, the XMG STUDIO series gives you a free choice: understated, elegant and without lighting elements, or with discreet ARGB-lit components. Don’t worry, even with the RGB-lit version of the desktop PC, we’ve taken care to keep the impact on DPC latencies to a minimum: That’s exactly why we ship every XMG STUDIO X or XMG STUDIO with OpenRGB control software, in which we have identified the optimal solution based on intensive testing. The open-source programme is significantly more lightweight, works more efficiently than the huge proprietary software suites of the mainboard manufacturers and therefore, has no negative impact on DPC latencies.
